Hi, I’m Serena, the early education fanatic behind Playful Poppies Learning Co.
My journey as an educator has been a trip around the world and back again. I went to grad school to learn how to teach high school biology but fell in love with early education at a summer job along the way, where I was dropped into the trenches of toddler land and LOVED it.
I swiftly made a 180 from teaching teenagers and filled my time (and bookshelves) with everything I could learn about early education. My early education classrooms became my labs where I put everything I was researching into practice in the real world.
In my research one day, I came across this gold nugget: the number one predictor of children’s academic success is their family’s involvement in their education. I felt like I had finally found the missing piece to the early education puzzle. I knew it was time to shift gears.
Fueled by 5000 hours of early education experience, a master’s degree in education, and a burning desire to help families bridge the gap in their children’s learning journey, I launched Playful Poppies, featuring…

Playful Poppies keeps me joyfully busy, but when I’m not elbow-deep in lesson planning, you can find me dancing 1950’s-style swing with my husband David, practicing yoga instead of folding laundry, planning my next picnic dinner, or enjoying an afternoon at the park with my toddler daughter Elaine.
